Best Scenic Drives in Morocco: The Most Beautiful Roads to Explore by Car

Morocco is one of those countries where the journey can be just as memorable as the destination. Within a few hours, you can drive from the Atlantic coast to the High Atlas Mountains, pass through traditional Berber villages, explore ancient kasbahs, and eventually reach the golden dunes of the Sahara.

If you enjoy travelling at your own pace, renting a car in Morocco is a great way to discover landscapes that are difficult to experience on a traditional tour. From spectacular mountain passes to peaceful coastal roads, here are some of the best scenic drives in Morocco to add to your road trip.

1. Marrakech to Ouarzazate via Tizi n’Tichka

Route: Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate
Distance: Around 200 km
Recommended time: 1 day, or longer with stops

The drive from Marrakech to Ouarzazate over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass is one of the most famous scenic drives in Morocco.

The N9 crosses the High Atlas Mountains, reaching around 2,260 metres above sea level. Along the way, you’ll see dramatic mountain landscapes, winding roads, valleys and traditional villages built into the hillsides.

One of the best stops along the route is Aït Ben Haddou, the famous fortified village and UNESCO World Heritage Site. From there, continue towards Ouarzazate, known for its kasbahs and film studios.

The road is paved and can be driven with a normal car in good conditions, although the mountain sections require careful driving.

Why drive it?

* Incredible High Atlas views
* Traditional Amazigh villages
* Aït Ben Haddou
* Ouarzazate and its desert landscapes
* One of Morocco’s most iconic mountain roads

2. The Dadès Valley and the Famous Hairpin Road

Route: Ouarzazate → Skoura → Boumalne Dadès → Dadès Gorge

If you’re looking for dramatic landscapes, the Dadès Valley should be high on your Morocco road trip itinerary.

The route follows the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing palm oases, traditional kasbahs and colourful rock formations. As you enter the Dadès Gorge, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with steep red cliffs surrounding the road.

The famous hairpin bends near the upper part of the gorge are one of the most photographed driving sections in Morocco. (Lonely Planet)

Take your time here. Stop at viewpoints, visit small villages and enjoy the changing colours of the mountains throughout the day.

3. Todra Gorge: A Short but Spectacular Drive

Route: Tinghir → Todra Gorge

The drive from Tinghir to the Todra Gorge is relatively short, but the scenery is impressive.

As you leave the palm-filled oasis of Tinghir, the road gradually enters a dramatic canyon surrounded by towering limestone walls. The gorge is particularly popular with hikers and rock climbers, but you don’t need to be adventurous to enjoy the drive.

It is also easy to combine Todra Gorge with Dadès Valley when travelling between Ouarzazate and Merzouga.

4. The Atlantic Coast: Essaouira to Agadir

Route: Essaouira → Taghazout → Agadir

For a completely different experience, head towards Morocco’s Atlantic coast.

The coastal road between Essaouira and Agadir offers a relaxed drive with ocean views, beaches, cliffs, argan trees and small coastal villages. It’s an excellent choice if you prefer a scenic road trip without challenging mountain roads.

Make a stop in Taghazout, one of Morocco’s best-known surf destinations, before continuing towards Agadir.

This route works particularly well as part of a longer Marrakech–Essaouira–Agadir road trip.

5. Tizi n’Test: A Quieter High Atlas Route

Route: Marrakech → Tizi n’Test → Taroudant

If you want to experience a less touristy mountain road, consider the Tizi n’Test Pass.

The road crosses the High Atlas between Marrakech and Taroudant, offering spectacular views over valleys and mountain villages. Compared with Tizi n’Tichka, Tizi n’Test is narrower and more demanding, so it is better suited to confident drivers who are comfortable on winding mountain roads. (CityGuide)

The route is especially rewarding when driven slowly, with plenty of time for viewpoints and stops.

Driving tip: Mountain roads can become more difficult during heavy rain or winter weather. Always check local road conditions before setting off.

6. The Road of 1,000 Kasbahs

Route: Ouarzazate → Skoura → Kelaat M’Gouna → Boumalne Dadès → Tinghir

This is one of the best scenic routes in southern Morocco for travellers interested in history and traditional architecture.

The Road of 1,000 Kasbahs passes through palm oases, rose-growing villages, ancient kasbahs and spectacular valleys. The Moroccan National Tourist Office also highlights this region as one of the great routes for discovering the landscapes and cultural heritage of southern Morocco. (Visit Morocco)

If you’re travelling towards the Sahara, this route is an excellent alternative to simply driving straight from Ouarzazate to Merzouga.

7. Marrakech to Merzouga: The Ultimate Morocco Road Trip

Route: Marrakech → Ouarzazate → Dadès → Tinghir → Erfoud → Merzouga

For travellers who want the full Morocco road trip experience, this is hard to beat.

The route takes you from the busy streets of Marrakech into the High Atlas Mountains, past Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, through the valleys and gorges of southern Morocco, and finally towards the Sahara Desert.

Arriving in Merzouga, you’ll see the spectacular Erg Chebbi dunes and experience a completely different side of Morocco.

Rather than rushing this journey in one day, plan at least 2 to 3 days so you have enough time to enjoy the stops along the way.

8. Chefchaouen to the Rif Mountains

Route: Chefchaouen → Rif Mountain roads → surrounding villages

Northern Morocco offers a completely different landscape from the desert south.

Starting in the blue city of Chefchaouen, you can explore winding mountain roads through the Rif, with green hills, valleys and small rural villages along the way.

This is a great choice for travellers who want to combine Morocco’s famous blue city with nature and quieter roads.

Why Rent a Car for a Scenic Road Trip in Morocco?

Public transport is useful for travelling between Morocco’s major cities, but having your own rental car gives you much more freedom.

You can stop whenever you discover an interesting viewpoint, spend more time in a small village, change your itinerary or take a scenic detour without having to follow a fixed schedule.

For a road trip, choose a comfortable and reliable vehicle that suits your route. A standard car is usually enough for major paved roads, while an SUV can be more comfortable for certain mountain or rougher routes.

At Find Car & Trip, you can rent a car in Morocco and plan your journey around the destinations you actually want to visit.

Tips for Driving in Morocco

Before starting your scenic drive, keep a few simple things in mind:

* Check your route and weather conditions before leaving.
* Avoid driving unfamiliar mountain roads at night.
* Fill up with fuel before entering remote areas.
* Keep water in the car, especially when travelling through southern Morocco.
* Take your time on mountain roads and avoid unnecessary overtaking.
* Don’t rely only on your phone signal in remote areas.
* Choose your rental car according to the type of road you’ll be driving.

Most importantly, don’t treat a scenic road trip like a race. The best part of driving through Morocco is being able to stop, take photos and enjoy the landscape.

When Is the Best Time for a Morocco Scenic Drive?

The best time depends on the route.

Spring is excellent for the mountains and northern Morocco, with pleasant temperatures and greener landscapes.

Autumn is particularly comfortable for longer road trips towards the Sahara, when temperatures are generally more manageable than during the peak summer heat.

Summer can be very hot in the desert and southern regions, so plan your driving hours carefully and avoid the hottest part of the day.

Mountain passes can also experience difficult conditions in winter, so check road conditions before travelling.
